Pretty In Pink

It's a rainy day outside today and I am watching the movie Pretty in Pink. And I didn't realize until I was almost done with this hat that I was using pink yarn! Duh.!

I am using Caron Simply Soft and an I hook

Rnd 1) ch32, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch accross, 2dc in last ch, now working on opposite side of chain dc accross in base of ch, dc in same st as starting. sl st to top of first dc
Rnd 2) ch2 (does NOT count as first st now and throughout) Working in back loops throughout hat, dc in back loop of each st around
Rnd 3-11) repeat rnd 2
Rnd 12-15) ch1, sc in same st and in each st around. Fasten off

Add pompoms to corners of top of hat. Have fun and happy hooking.
I only ask that you give credit to my site if you use my patterns. You may do what ever you like with your own creations. ;o)

  3. I adore your blog, your pix, and your patterns. Thank you for sharing. Also, my family travelled to Maine about two years ago, and I absolutely loved the area, the cooler weather, and scenery. We stayed near Pemaquid Point. Just wondering where you are in regards to that location. I'm in New Jersey--about two miles from the ocean--hot today, but always a bit cooler along the shore!

  4. Thanks everyone! I'm so glad you enjoy them.

Ribbons Undone, we love it here in Maine. We are just a few minutes from Newport, which is inbetween Bangor and Augusta! We have visited Pemaquid, soo pretty! There are so many other places we have gone. I should start posting some of them.

  5. This is adorable, and it was so easy! I just made it for my niece--I posted the project on Ravelry, and it'll be on my blog tomorrow (with a link to this pattern!)

This pom pom tutorial helped me. (I'm a new crocheter, so I'd never made a pom pom!)

Thanks for a great, free pattern!

  6. So cute! Is it done in the round? I haven't crocheted in a while and not sure I am understanding the pattern - make a tube and seam at the top? Thanks

  7. I Love the pattern, my family is from Skowhegan Maine and we go about once a year, always my favorite vacation!

  8. So I love your work... But I was wondering if you could please do this hat or another hat like this but with step by step pictures. Sorry I am new to this whole crochet thing and started by making just blankets. Getting bored with that I thought I'd move onto hats. Please help me!

  9. Please help me too, I am sure it is obvious how to do this but not to me! I started crocheting last year. Thanks, I love this hat and want to make some for my neices.

  11. Thank you so much for this pattern. It reminds me of Abby Cadabby. My granddaughters are going to be so excited when they see the hats. I can't wait to get them made!

    Thanks, Penny

  12. I want to make this cute hat for my niece this winter, but I can't figure it out! Is it done in a round, or whip-stitched at the end?? It seems as though it's done in a round -- is the sl st to top of first dc where it becomes round? Thanks!

  13. I made this hat and gave it to a friend with a 4-year old. The hat was WAY too small and didn't even come close to fitting the child's head. I will try again with a 40-stitch chain to see if that fits.

  14. I love this hat. So quick and easy. For those who are a little lost, you have to join your sl stitch to the very first dc you made then start working in a circle. (atleast that is how I did it...)
Thank you so much for posting this and helping to keep my little tot's ears nice and warm this winter!!
    Many blessings.

  15. BTW... I cast on 40 and it seems like it will fit my 4 year old's noggin' pretty well though I haven't tested it yet. Just from eye'n it though it looks like it will fit wonderfully.

  18. I made it by using the chain as the Center of the top of the hat, then you work along the chain, with the first row continuing on te OTHER SIDE of the chain, so your hat really has 64 stitches. No sewing required.

  21. HUH? I've been crocheting for awhile now and I am SO confused after the ch32 and DC across...then ?????? I am so lost as to the "now, ....etc." Can anyone explain it to me. Does this hat work in "rounds" or back and forth?? What the heck. The 32 ch does not seem long enough to go around a child's head. Need help here. Thanks

    1. Hey Carolina, I was a little confused reading the pattern until I started crocheting it. First you chain 32 and dc into the third ch from the hook. Dc across until you get to the end of the row and do 2 dc in last stitch. Then you work on the opposite side of the chain and dc across that row until you get to the end then slip stitch into the very first dc you did at the very beginning. After round 1 you will have a long oval shape. round 2 (you will be working in the round now) then chain2 and double crochet around the whole hat and slip stitch at the beginning and repeat till round 12

  22. I don' understand why there is a chain 2 at the beginning of each round.

  29. Is there a way to make this hat into a adult hat?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, I thought this was a really cute hat, but as many others here have commented... The directions are incomplete and questions aren't being answered. Think I'll find another pattern that at least tells you what size child this hat forf and explains it better.

    ReplyDelete
  31. There are a lot of questions on this so I'm hoping to help out. I understand how it is to have an old blog post and not see the comments being made, especially if it's attached to an old email address. So here we go:
The size of the hat can be changed. You just increase or decrease the # of chains to begin with. also, changing your yarn and hook will make a difference. She used a thinner yarn and larger hook. So if you use a larger yarn, like Red Heart Super Saver (worsted weight 4), you would use a smaller hook.

"I am using Caron Simply Soft and an I hook"

In this round you create a chain and then come back along that chain doing dcs. Then instead of turning your work you will actually go around the chain and continue your dcs on the other side of the foundation chain. This will be the top of the hat and you won't have to sew it closed. This step does that for you. If it is still confusing you can find a video on youtube. If you can't find one for this find one for baby booties. It's the same concept.

"Rnd 1) ch32, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, 2dc in last ch, now working on opposite side of chain dc across in base of ch, dc in same st as starting. sl st to top of first dc"

For Rnd 2 you do a ch 2 and the a dc in the same stitch. This actually fills in that gap that you tend to get when you are finishing a row and moving up. So instead of having a holey look it is filled in by the ch 2 but it doesn't make your hat any bigger.

"Rnd 2) ch2 (does NOT count as first st now and throughout) Working in back loops throughout hat, dc in back loop of each st around
    Rnd 3-11) repeat rnd 2"

These last rounds are the brim of the hat that is on the forehead. You can see it in the picture the difference between the stitches on her head and forehead.
"Rnd 12-15) ch1, sc in same st and in each st around. Fasten off"

I hope this helped clear some confusion up for anyone who comes here in the future. And if you persevered to read through the comments and got to mine, congrats! You're great. Good luck on making the hat. It is super cute!

  32. there's something wonky about your instruction for the joining that I'm not understanding at all. It's looking very ugly on on my project. what am I missing?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Judith, I am assuming that is the “hole” that is made when you chain 2. Going down to a chain 1 or eliminating the chain on consecutive rounds should make it flow neater.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Let me clarify. There should not be a chain between the end of the one side of the piece and where you continue on the opposite side. If you still have a hole, it may be that you are chaining in the wrong chain of your starting chain. You should join in the very top chain. Hope that helps.
