Bottoms Up

This hat is worked by doing a simple band and then working your way to the top. Just a little some thing different!~
Very versatile hat, you can change the yarn and hook size very easily.

For this I used an I hook and worsted weight yarn. Red Heart or Vannas Choice or some thing similar work well.

Band:
Row 1) ch5, 1hdc in first st and in each st across. (4hdc)
Row 2) ch1, hdc in first st and in each st across.turn
Row 3) repeat rnd 2 for however length needed to fit around head plus an extra inch and a half (mine was 23 1/2 inches)
(optional color change) ch1, sc across to end of row, 2sc in corner st, working in ends of sc rows, sc evenly across piece. Slip st to form circle 1 1/2 inch from end opposite end of piece.
Rnd 1) ch1, 2hdc in first st, hdc in each of next 2sts, * 2hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 2sts, repeat from * around. sl st to top of first hdc (changing back to main color)
Rnd 2) ch1, hdc around, sl st to close.
Rnd 3-8) Repeat round 2
Rnd 9) ch1, hdc in first st and in next 5sts, hdc next 2 sts together, * hdc in next 6sts, hdc next 2sts together, repeat from * around. (depending on your length, the last set might not come out to an even count)
Rnd 10) ch1, hdc in first st and in next 4sts, hdc next 2sts together, * hdc in next 5sts, hdc next 2sts together, repeat from * around. sl st to close
Rnd 11)ch1, hdc in first st and in next 3sts, hdc next 2sts together, * hdc in next 4sts, hdc next 2sts together, repeat from * around. sl st to close
Rnd 12) ch1, hdc in first st and in next 2sts, hdc next 2sts together, * hdc in next 3sts, hdc next 2sts together, repeat from * around. sl st to close
Rnd 13) ch1, hdc in first st and in next 1sts, hdc next 2sts together, * hdc in next 2sts, hdc next 2sts together, repeat from * around. sl st to close
Rnd 14) ch1, hdc first 2sts together, hdc next 2sts together around. Fasten off and pull tight to close circle. weave in ends.

Sew a button to tab placing where you like. Enjoy.

  4. Yay, I hope it works out. Let me know if you have any questions. It took me two days to write it up after I made the hat and I lost my notes!

  5. You should probably add *turn* on rnd 2 on the first part, took me a minute to figure out what you wanted me to do. I thought for a second I was gonna go around it, not back across lol. Might confuse more beginners like me LOL

  9. This is a great hat! I'm curious - how do you get from the 5-st band of row 2 to a band that is 23 1/2 inches? Thanks!

  10. I found your site through a link on allfreecrochet.com ---I like to send a thank you note when I come across a site like yours when I know a very real person has decided to share their work with whomever. Somewhere lurking in the back of my mind I am aware every crochet pattern has a creator, but the information and contact link aren’t always at hand. Generous folk who share ought to know somewhere another real person “out there” appreciates the effort. In reality I suppose is should say I’m compelled to send such notes. My Dear Old Sainted Mother was a stickler for thank you notes and promised me a good old fashioned haunting if I ever failed. I tend to believe her, as far as I know she only lied to me once, and that was at about the age of 3. She tried to convince me the fried green tomatoes she set before me were pieces of meat with seeds. I didn’t buy it; I was 3, not stupid!
I stared for some time at the photo of the dew covered red and yellow flower on your site trying to decide what kind of flower it was; I failed. I came up with three guesses, Iris, tulip and cannas. I am a Texan and I’m not sure cannas will survive a Maine winter without lifting which can be a pain. No matter the type the photo is lovely. 12. John Hablinski~ It is a tulip! I'm glad you like it. They are one of the flowers that do really well for me....I need the hardy ones that don't require a lot of work.
thank you everyone for the wonderful comments. Holidays will keep me busy, but I intend to be back full force in January!

  13. I am wondering if there isn't a mistake in The directions for this patten is very confusing. I did rnd 1 after completing the band, but it seems to be too many stitches. Can anyone help me. I am wondering if it shouldn't read *2hdc in next stitch, and 1 hdc in each of next 2sts. repeat from * around.

  18. hi! this is a great pattern, but i'm having problems...when i start the color change and begin going around the entire hat (what you refer to as the end of your rnd 3), i'm not sure what stitch to sc into? you mentioned to work into the ends of the sc rows, but it doesn't seem like there is a clear stitch to consistently go into?

  20. How much yarn does this take? Will a 3 1/2 oz. skein of worsted make it or should I buy more? My stash doesn't need any more leftovers if possible.

  23. My toddler has a big head -- it's her huge brain, I'm convinced! ;)

Anyhoo, I've made too many top-down hats that don't fit her massive cranium. This should do the trick! Thank you! :)

  25. I started alternating even crochet arounds (2 thru 8) with the decrease rounds after even round #5. Otherwise it would have looked like a balloon on top of my sons head.

  27. I made this cap for my granddaughter but the pattern left a hole in the top. It wouldn't "pull tight" I made a sc "patch" to fill the hole and sewed it in. Still trying to figure out what went wrong. Thanks for the pattern.

  28. I just found this pattern. I don't know if you still monitor responses to it or not. I would suggest you revisit and address more in detail after changing the first color and joining to make a circle.
